Republican Post Election Hysteria

For me it became glaringly obvious Sunday afternoon that Republicans had come unwound in the days following an Obama and Democratic victory. I found that my car had been broken into and there had literature left on my driver’s seat telling me that my soul needs to be saved, because I am going to hell. I was deceived by the anti-Christ. My crime? Exercising my First Amendment right to free speech. I have an Obama bumper sticker on my car. Never mind that the person or people who vandalized my car committed a real crime, a felony in fact. It is called breaking and entering.

It is two days later and gun sales are soaring in Virginia.

Weapons dealers in much of the United States are reporting sharply higher sales since Barack Obama won the presidency a week ago.

Buyers and sellers attribute the surge to worries that Obama and a Democratic-controlled Congress will move to restrict firearm ownership, despite the insistence of campaign aides that the president-elect supports gun rights and considers the issue a low priority.

That is right. We are in the midst of an economic meltdown, but worry about your guns, as entire industries are on the verge of collapse. Get a hold of yourselves.

As if that were not enough, Congressman Paul Broun, Republican, from Georgia’s 10th Congressional District added to the hysteria and said Monday he fears that President-elect Obama will establish a Gestapo-like security force to impose a Marxist or fascist dictatorship.

Broun cited a July speech by Obama that has circulated on the Internet in which the then-Democratic presidential candidate called for a civilian force to take some of the national security burden off the military.

“That’s exactly what Hitler did in Nazi Germany and it’s exactly what the Soviet Union did,” Broun said. “When he’s proposing to have a national security force that’s answering to him, that is as strong as the U.S. military, he’s showing me signs of being Marxist.”

This was reported on FOX News. Too bad they did not give the entire story, but one can expect that from them.

The Atlanta Journal Constitution gave the entire story.

Obama’s comments about a national security force came during a speech in Colorado in which he called for expanding the nation’s foreign service.

“We cannot continue to rely only on our military in order to achieve the national security objectives that we’ve set,” Obama said in July. “We’ve got to have a civilian national security force that’s just as powerful, just as strong, just as well-funded.”

The Obama transition team declined to comment on Broun’s remarks. But spokesman Tommy Vietor said Obama was referring in the speech to a proposal for a civilian reserve corps that could handle postwar reconstruction efforts such as rebuilding infrastructure — an idea endorsed by the Bush administration.

FOX News is reporting half truths, incomplete facts, and is inflaming general hysteria among Republicans. That is fair and balanced reporting for you. Never mind the facts, never mind that their leader, George W. Bush endorsed it. But, go ahead run around and scream Marxist and inflame the ill informed. I guess that is why anyone would watch FOX News anyway, to remain ill informed.

Really, people, grab the smelling salts and get a hold of yourselves. You are making a scene and complete fools of yourselves.
