Biden Defends Americans

Today vice presidential candidate Joe Biden defended all Americans in the face of divisive language from the other vice presidential candidate, Sarah Palin who proclaimed at a rally in Greensboro, North Carolina:

“We believe that the best of America is in the small towns that we get to visit, and in the wonderful little pockets of what I call the real America, being here with all of you hard-working, very patriotic, very pro-America areas of this great nation,” she said.

“This is where we find the kindness and the goodness and the courage of everyday Americans,” Palin added.”

Joe Biden fired back:

“It doesn’t matter where you live, we all love this country, and I hope it gets through. We all love this country,” he said. “We are one nation, under God, indivisible. We are all patriotic. We all love our country in every part of this nation! And I’m tired. I am tired, tired, tired, tired of the implications about patriotism.”

It has become the mantra of the Republican Party that they are the only ones who are patriotic, that they are the ones who know what patriotism is, all others are not patriotic and all others who did not live in the right place, small towns or rural areas, are not patriotic. This is an extreme insult to every other American who does not follow their ideology or lives in a metropolitan area. The Republican Party does not have the exclusive rights to patriotism, nor can the Republican Party define what patriotism means, or who is patriotic and who is not based on any standard. Should anyone subscribe to this ideology let me remind you that this is a free country and this is a diverse nation with people from all walks of life. Let me also remind you of a time when patriotism was defined and defined badly, the 1950’s under Joseph McCarthy with McCarthyism, a very frightening period of time in American history. There was another place when there was hyper-nationalism, 1930’s Germany. It is an outrage that the Republican Party continues on this dangerous path, it invites fascism that is extremely dangerous to those who do not fall into the right group.

Speaking for myself, I live in a metropolitan area with 5.1 million people, my heritage dates back to colonial America, and there is a president in my family tree. My family history is strongly rooted in America from colonialism to date. We have been there for all of the highs and all if its lows. I am among one of the most patriotic people you could ever meet, but since I do not live in the right place, nor do I subscribe to the Republican ideal of patriotism that I am not patriotic. Well, that is bull! I am extremely patriotic. Dare I say all people, whether born here or immigrated here, are patriotic as well. It is time to end this nationalist ideology. It is extremely dangerous and divisive.

The Republican Party needs to get booted out of power this November in order to keep America free.

  2. Listen, what has been coming from the Republicans for the last eight years and what they choose as their candidates for 08 is frightening.

  3. Ask Palin where the American troops in Iraq and Afghanistan live. They live in Democratic New York and California and in Republican Texas and Alaska. But they all spill American blood. She is not fit for vice-president or governor for that matter.

    Comment by VGG — October 18, 2008 @ 12:09 am

  4. It’s the typical Republican playbook – “If you don’t agree with us, then you’re unpatriotic.” Funny thing is, I could have sworn this country was built on the right to disagree. If that’s so, it might seem that questioning another’s patriotism for disagreeing with you is rather “unpatriotic.”

  5. The controversy was similar to one that enveloped presidential candidate Joe Biden last winter. Family Tree

  6. Palin is a fool, which just shows how little she understands “real” America. The first time I left Penn Station in New York City, I felt the real America. This is a city where hundreds of different cultures from all over the world live and work together and get together, accept each other. Most small towns ostrasize those who don’t share their skin color, religion, language, etc.. Palin is retarded for not knowing this.

  7. Good to see liberalism is alive and vitriolic. Seriously – any thinking human being knows what Sara was saying. And if we want to speak about gaffe’s, is there no better example of foot-in-mouth disease than Joe Biden? Do you not know this guy?

Ha ha ha ha ha – you all deserve this guy – I can’t wait for he and Odummy to take office and see how they respond to a world ready to eat them alive. There’s gonna be a lot of blaming, deflecting, but after a couple of years they will have no one to blame but themselves and their foolish cronies in Congress.

  9. Why are Repbulicans so blind to Sarah? She is an insult to all intelligent educated working mothers in America. She doesn’t represent me, and I can not see her as president Palin, with her husband behind the wheel. Do republicans even know the definition of socialism? My husband is a REAL Plumber with a REAL lic. and guess what he is voting Obama… if the middle class don’t have money to spend, who the hell is going to pay for his damn services you moron republicans.

And every republican I talk to is like a lunitic Cult member, that is ready to degrade and deface any humanity in a person if they don’t see it “their way” well you know that isn’t Pro America now is it there gosh darn it…

  10. I wonder how the families of the firefighters who died in the twin towers on 9/11 feel about Palin’s comments. I believe they all lived in NEW YORK – A BLUE STATE.
Sarah Palin is one of the most desicable and ignorant human beings I’ve ever seen. That she thinks she has the right to say such divisive, hateful things shows her true character and it is not “hocky mom.” It’s evil.

Comment by Shannon from patriotic CA — October 18, 2008 @ 1:54 am

  11. Biden is wrong! His east coast Bias is on display again. Not all Americans love America. Everyone from a small town knows she was correct. Not a lot of flag burning or government trashing going on in small town USA. I am so glad my 20 years of service to our country is over. I would not want to serve under Obama/Biden.

    Comment by Larry — October 18, 2008 @ 1:57 am

  12. Palin is a wack job!
A loose canon with a mouth and little else!
They will work right up until November 4th to smear Obama because they cannot win on their own!
    Give it up!
The country is tired of your bullshit lies!
Your policies have gotten us where we are now.
    Just SHUT UP!

  13. Joe Biden is really old. I don’t believe anything he says. he keeps saying he comes from a “working class part of Delaware”. Was that like 50 years ago? Come on. he’s been in washington for 35 years. he doesn’t have a clue what middle class people think. What a joke.

    Comment by RSP — October 18, 2008 @ 2:35 am

  14. Let’s see here, Palin is an idiot because she did not remember the last book she read.

    Biden is the smart one:

    3 letter word – JOBS

    Television in the 1920’s

Does not remember who the Presidents were.

Does not have the ability to comprehend; Article I of our constitution.

Goes against what his running mates plans (clean coal).

    Barack Obama errors

I have been to most of the 57 states I have three more to go.

I did not know the man that changed my life hated America.

Hey they guy attack a police station and injured 7 people, 40 years ago when I was 8.
(Fast forward 32 years: Future Democrat presidential candidate; I was 8 years old when Osama attacked America)

Is San Francisco, or Los Angles pro-America cities, NO!

Who shows more pride in America? Small towns, they keep it simple and real.

If you want to become France vote for Obama.

If you like the principles that The United States stands for vote for McCain.

  15. What the Hell is this “Palin” doing about the hundreds of thousands of would-be “hockey-moms” if they could afford to pay for their kids to pay in organized sports? I don’t see the Palin brood suffering for anything. Don’t even get me started on teaching your children responsible sexual behaviour…

  18. Please, Reps, stop trying to convince me that a true patriotic American means someone who owns 50 guns and 0 books and spends h/h entire live between WalMart, hunting grounds and a local beer joint oblivious to, ignorant, fearful and hateful of, and totally clueless about anything beyond their picket fences. Our beloved, magnificent, multicultural and multinational, heroic and incredibly intelligent and generous, urban and rural America is much, much more than that. BTW, so are many parts of the rest of the world, which we can no longer ignore whether we like it or not. America deserves better. Much, much better than a brainless pit bull with beliefs and “intelligence” fit for Medievil/Great Inquisition times. She appeals to the darkest and most disgusting remnants of racist, ignorant and isolated America. Unfortunately, some of it is still out there, be it in megapolices or small towns. People, fight for better education for your children and remember – palins don’t need educated and open-minded citizens because such citizens will send them packing! Education will save your childrens’ lives because educated citizens can not be tricked into hopeless bloody wars. Don’t let it happen again! Do not fall for “divide and conquer” ideology! United we win! Sorry, what was that? You think that bitter truth, criticism and honesty = hate and lack of patriotism? Well, why then do you stop, warn and at times discipline your children? Our of love or out of hate? You are welcome to disagree with me but don’t you dare to doubt my patriotism based on my zip code.
On a lighter side – my friend once happened to overhear a couple of Texas ladies in the nail salon genuinely worrying if they’ll be able to find a nail salon in Paris, France, and Rome, Italy – they were heading off to a vacation in Europe for the first time and apparently they’d prepared themselves to lose touch with human civilization upon crossing the US border:-) That’s how much we know and respect about Planet Earth:-) Is that a true patriotism?

We should have known better about Iraq too before voting for that war, at least as much as the rest of the world had without any special secret intelligence, and that was no friggin nail salon. Ignorance can equal shame and death of American boys, and Ignorance, Thy Name is Sarah Palin!

  19. Bachmann, Palin and those Republican sympathizers don’t get it! People are tired of the divisiveness (pro-/anti-American), hate-mongering, fear-mongering. The Republican campaign is bringing out the worst in people. This is not how I want Americans to be. I want Americans to be united, positive and work together to solve the country’s problems.

By the way RSP, McCain has been in Congress longer than Biden and McCain has seven houses and thirteen cars. McCain has not mentioned “middle class” even once in his campaign.

  21. Sarah Palin has offended many Americans with that comment. Look at the choice of her words. Real Americans, Best of America, Pro America. Who is she to say who’s Pro American or not. I think the governor stepped out of line today and I think Sarah Palin owes the country an apology. Where does she get off saying which parts of America is patriotic or not. Its the leader of her party who’s patriotism and all of the republicans that supported his policies and agenda like Mccain who’s patriotism should be in question. Its the republicans who led to this economic crisis on Wall St. and 2 wars abroad. What good has Bush done for this country? Mccain would not be different especially with Palin as VP. Palin role in the Mccain campaign is that of a secretary, she has no voice at all.

  22. Bravo! Well said, Julie. Where would the the GOP be if it was not attacking us metropolitan living-questioning Americans. Dissent is Patriotic, it’s what this country was founded on. I am a proud American who is trilled Bush is being evicted from the White House and Obama will be our President.

    Comment by Jessica in NYC — October 18, 2008 @ 6:24 am

  23. Palin is filling the chest of these folks with patriotic pride which is wonderful, however, she then follows it with hateful, negeative, words that just fill the heads of these smalltown bigoted people who have not yet been able to realize we live in 2008, Palin keeps pushing them back to the 40’s and the GOP finds it acceptable. Wanna see some scary stuff, pull up the below link and listen to some of the individual McPain/Failin attendee’s after a rally…..it is downright scary.

    Comment by Phil L in FL — October 18, 2008 @ 10:39 am

  24. I am very suprised at the amount of hate speech that comes from Palin’s mouth. I am from the great state of Alaska, and she does not represent us very well. Her comment:

“”We believe that the best of America is in the small towns that we get to visit, and in the wonderful little pockets of what I call the real America, being here with all of you hard-working, very patriotic, very pro-America areas of this great nation,””

TRANSLATION: We believe in small town America (you know people like us) Not those big cities with such diverse populations with you know blacks, AY-RABS, people just not like us. People like me and my running mate, thats what I call the real America. Being here with all you white hard working people ( no not the welfare people and Katrina survivers looking for a hand outs). We all know those big city folk get those wierd ideas in their head from being around all those foreigners, and you (the white, the hard working, the pure)are the true America.

If anyone has studied political communication you are well aware of the term “Hate Speach”. Since we live in such a hypocritical politicaly correct society candidates for any public office have to express more candor when using basic elements such as race, class, sexual orientation to gain favor with constituants. Sara Palin does this very well. Anyone that can see past her words, and understand the true meaning of what she says will see that her speeches are really no different then those of George Wallace.

    Comment by Kennede — October 18, 2008 @ 11:58 am

  25. Palin is an absolute morom. Apparently I can pay taxes and work my butt off just like her little towns but I’m not a real American. Maybe she should think twice as to where the majority of her coffers com from. Not to mention she wants 8 year old rape victims to be foreced to carry a pregnancy and women who have been raped to pay for their own DNA kits. Can you all think of ONE other crime in which the victim has to pay for their own investigation? Clue: there isn’t one. Then she proclaims herself to be a feminist. Talk about letting the wolf guard the hen house!

  26. Tell me who your friends are… and I’ll tell who you are

    -Who endorses mr.Barack Hussein Obama
a)The Fundamentalist government of Iran. Konwn of course for their “love” for democracy, woman’s rights, human rights in general and for world peace.
b)Kim Il Jung dictator of North Korea
c)The Castro Brothers whom have been ruling Cuba for 50 YEARS in which 6,014 political dissidents have been executed under the application of a DEATH PENALTY by Firing Squad en force in the Island since January 1st, 1959.
d)Hugo Chavez who served himself from Democracy now trying to destroy that institution in Venezuela closing opposition papers and television and radio station in his path to imitate the Castro Brothers and state in power for a lifetime.
e)Robert Mugabe the dictator of Zimbawe who does not accept the rule of majority via free elections.
f)Reverend Wright who although America is a goddemned land NEVER QUIT IT and try to find sanctuary in Africa.
Last but not least and concerning newspapers endorsements to mr.Obama in this country. Let us cite one of the “supporters” that big friend of American Leftists, General Fidel Castro: “the Press is to be Paid or Punished” (Havana University, late November 1963). -His cronies baptized this slogan in Cuba as the “3-Ps”
Liberals are in for a big surprise if at the end the election tilts in favor of the “Gang of 3” Pelosi-Reid-Obama whom first executed a coup d’etat against Hilary Clinton (left center i.e.not not good enough). The Marxist phylosophy of life proven anti natural and a total blunder since November 9/10 1989 in Berlin, cannot be tried in our country. This is a land of creators, doers and character and not of welfare getters and people that have to be told what to do. The race card blackmailing being used by the Gang of 3 will push this society back to resentment instead of looking out for a brighter future for all peoples who live in this great land. Do not play with fire DEMAGOGUES.

  27. tom,

no, palin’s an idiot because she has shown little capacity to think for herself … because she couldn’t form a logical opinion on various foreign affairs and domestic economic issues … because she hasn’t shown herself to have any more than a very basic understanding of important issues … because of the blank look on her face when asked about the role of the office she seeks before proceeding to argue that the vp has extensive legislative powers.

that she couldn’t name a single periodical she reads is only icing on the cake.

  28. McSame claims to be a uniter and says he reaches across the aisle. He just doesn’t reach far enough. As for his uniting skills, well we are getting a huge dose of how effective he is at that. Our country is wide open divided these days and it is his doing.

  29. I apologize that I am not as pro-American as the people of Alaska. Maybe one day I will come to my senses and realize that the best thing for this country is to follow Sarah Palin’s superior values and force a woman who has been raped to have the rapist’s child.

  31. McCain and Palin are promoting division in this country. Shame on you McCain.. You were once praised for being patriotic and putting country first. What has happened to you? Desperation to be the President has made you put country last? I will never remember you as a prisoner of war or someone who fought for our freedom. Now I will remember you as someone who promotes hatred, picks just anyone to be your running mate and someone who spends time smearing your opponents character no matter the cost to make yourself look good. Well you do not look good. And your running mate is an embarrassment to all women. I would love to see a woman in the white house one day.. BUT THE RIGHT WOMAN NOT ANY WOMAN. Shame on you McCain.. And shame on Palin. She needs to go back and actually read some books and remember what America and women’s rights are all about. Scary for all those who support McCain and Palin, the future of your children is at stake, but youre too ignorant to see it.

    Comment by Emily — October 19, 2008 @ 12:47 pm

  32. Suzy Q.

You must be in Biden’s math class. Senator Biden entered the United States Senate in 1972. John McCain became a Congressman in 1982 and then a Senator in 1986. Joe has 10 years of doing nothing before McCain came to Washington and 14 years of doing nothing before McCain went to the Senate.

Do we want a President that is going to bring a Global crisis because of his inexperience? That is what Joe believes and he is a student of History!
